Plan

I plan to build a pole barn for storing my Courier, F150, park my tractor, and area to work on equipment with tools, welder, etc. I have bought 8 poles. I got an area in mind but i dont know what length or width to build it. I also dont know what other lumber i need to buy either. Im ready to put it up! Any ideas?

Thanks

Well, I don't think that you're going to get a very big barn with 8 poles.

Metal skinned barns are something like 6 or feet between poles -- I can't remember which.

If you do want to build your own, you might well be better off looking for a package from one of the building supply places. They probably either have instructions or offer seminars on how to do it.

I hired mine done, and I'd do the same again. There are lots of hard and heavy steps. ( Such as putting up the trusses).

You may also find that your friendly local government has some restrictions on what you can do. Also, they would probably like you to submit the plans for a building permit. (Then they'll have the nerve to inspect your work and raise your property taxes!)

Good Luck,

hj

Don't think there is any restrictions. Our farm is far away from the city...to the point Sheriffs don't know how to hardly get to our address. But I know they can look at maps and that the tax person will ride around.

40x60....jesus. That is huge. I can build what I can build for now and just add on. People say they will help me.

You can not and will not have enough room when you build it. TRUST ME!!!!!!

40 x 60 sounds big till you put a few work benches down the sides and across the back and put a bunch of tool boxes and few project trucks in there.

Plus a large space to work out of the weather is a plus, heating it is not, but doable.

I got a 30x40 3 sided pole barn built in 3 1/2 days Amish....metal roof and sides, 5 on 5 trusses, snow loads is something to consider, well maybe no in GA.

I finished the front and concreted 30x20 and put in a 10 wide roll up and a walk in. Graveled the last 2 outer bays 20x30 and put up a 6"x24' I beam with a trolley and a 3 ton chain lift.

After a work bench down one end and across the back with a welding table, all the tools ect I can get one truck with both doors open on there and am to tight.

Make it as big as you can afford, I added a 12x40 lean too on the back shortly afterwards. So talk to some ol farmers ck out what they have and have fun with it. But build to always be able to expand, cause you will.

A 2 car metal frame carport is quickly put up for $500 to $700 (cheaper if you buy and do your self, they are a hour put up with one buddy helping) and can be closed in at your time and money. And they are not a permanent structure, they are built on runners, so no added property taxes.
