It's been a long ride, seen alot of this country, and it's done me well... But I don't think my inline6 has much power left in my 94 F150.
I'm considering my options, and I'll be honest... I am tired, and I do mean tired... Of how slow the 300 I6 is. I get passed by honda civics, I have to plan all of my driving, passing someone has almost killed me more than once. I just cannot handle the fact that no matter what I do... It's not going anywhere fast. Foot to the floor vs. half way... No difference made. It's always been slow like this and I can't handle another inline 6. I'm not doing it again. The truck has 230,000 miles on it and I rate the life of the transmission (M5R2) and engine at maybe another 30,000 miles. So a year and some change.
How hard is something like a 351 swap and what kind of MPG should I expect? I've also considered a 4bt swap, but I think this may be more work than it's worth.
I figured a ZF5 tranny, 351 engine mounts and the whole EFI set up from any junk yard truck from the same year and I'm more or less good to go. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the ZF5 and M5R2 are the exact same dimensions, correct?
If you found a donor truck same year (easiest) then everything is a bolt in operation. You'll need fuel lines from frame to fuel rail also. So don't cut them. I reused the 300-6 line with the funky diaphragm thing in it and it didn't get enough fuel. Had to find a v8 one.
It shouldn't be too hard to find a 4wd F250/350 with a 351/zf5 combo. Maybe one that was rear-ended or something, that would make it nice and cheap.
'87 to 97 should bolt in as long as you have everything. In '87 on the 351 FI was just an option and this was also the last year for the 4speed manual (T19 I think) so '88 and up will always have EFI and a ZF5 for a manual. There are some differences in the fuel injection and electronic control systems form some years that I'm not knowledgeable in but as long as you have a complete donor with all the stuff you can just swap it over.
