Clean as descibed, then break a ring in half and use it to scrape the carbon out of the ring grooves

So after I finished sulking over the busted short block and doing the math on the cost and time involved with rebuilding / overhaulling the old engine, I went back to the JY and got myself another 50 oz short block; they exchanged it so there was no cost. The replacement is out of a 94 f150. I figure I should still do something nice with the old motor but right now I want to get this project over with. I saved the gt40p heads, cam, lifters, and push rods. I will post updates here as appropriate but general questions that are non-marine specific will have a post of their own.
