Have 1976 F250 2WD auto with 60k miles and no rust. Father in laws truck who died and now my wife insists on keeping. Sat 12 years. Bad 360 motor. If we are keeping then we are driving it so want late model fuel injected motor and if needed a later model granny. I will do switch myself. Want some fuel economy and pull a 3000 pound trailer on occasion.
Ideas? Would like to keep Ford stuff if possible and an easy switch would make things easier for me.
Hmm.. that's asking for alot and there is no free lunch.....I foresee a 12V Cummins diesel swap in your future. Alternatively, an LS-series engine backed by a 4L80... yes, that's GM-speak.
If something is wrong with fuel injection its expensive. You can buy a brand new carburetor every year for 10 years before your in fuel injection money

You're just looking at the initial cost which is somewhat myopic. It may appear expensive up front but ya really need to look at the marginal return on investment - the miles driven to recoup the initial cost, marginal return in mpg, and apply that to how many miles would be required to recover that initial cost before it starts paying back.

That's a straight line projection based on current dollars and not really applicable because it doesn't factor in the current and future cost per mile and how many driven miles would be required to recover the initial cost.
Well I was speaking more from a conversion side of things which I really shouldn't have looking back.
I nominate a 351w or a 460. Dents came with these so mounts should be easy and cheap to find. Finding an entire donor vehicle would be ideal to ensure you have everything.
A 351w will get your job done and can be built for more with respectable fuel economy. A 460 will give you more potential then you could ask for but will suck on mileage. Both are plentiful and relatively cheap.
I know some people will object here but the question was regarding options not opinions.
If you want something late model and keeping it a ford. Both the 5.4 and 4.6 engines are great. I really like them, yeah they aren't as main stream as the old SBF but they do the job. Especially for a street rod. Plus the electronics are easy to deal with if you have the required components.
I would build a nice 390 and put that in, no messin around, should bolt right in and if cost is no concern buy a stand alone fuel injection system for it. Just my $.02.
I have a 390 in my 75. I like the engine but it does need rebuilt. I will be doing the stand alone system for it. Havent decided on holley or msd; probably some other good options as well. Just want a no nonsense reliable setup for a good all around truck. Holley is cheaper though by 1/2; around $1000.
