I just traded for a 84 F250 ext cab 4X4 6.9L ..The guy told me the motor was not any good, so i was wondering would it be easier to swap to a gas motor or replace it with another diesel engine. I know nothing about diesel engines. thanxs for any info you may have
What, exactly, does "not any good" mean? What is wrong with it? If you've got the talent to do the swap, then you've got the talent to learn about diesel engines.
If the engine is in fact done for the best way to make up your mind is to price another diesel engine. When mine let go I was suprised to find out how much they cost. It was about $4500-$5000 for a rebuilt long block, about $7000 from ford for a new complete( non-tubo 7.3),
and around $2000-$2500 for a junkyard pull-out. I ended up buying an old chevy diesel to drive until I found an engine. Got a 6.9 from a guy that had 50,000 miles on it for $700. Was really lucky he didn't know what it was worth. I have put another 50,000 miles on it with no problems at all. If you can I would stay diesel but a gas motor shouldn't be too hard to swap in.
P.S. The guy I bought mine from swithed a 460 into a the pick-up that my motor came out of because after it would sit for a day it would lose it's fuel prime. It started doing it to me to and a $40 elecrtric in-line fuel pump fixxed it right up
