Old Vs New

Hey guys. I got bored and decided to do a little research and what I found was both funny and surprising. The big hype is the new 3.5L EcoBoost and the new Coyote they put into the F-150s. They both put out impressive torque numbers! EcoBoost puts down 420 ft lbs and the 5.0 does 385 ft lbs. Then I got to thinkin... what do these motors put down TO THE WHEELS. As it turns out... our 460s puts nearly identical torque to the tires than Fords spankin new engines. Whats the difference? I paid $3000 for my 1992. A 2012 costs $35,000. I know what your thinkin... "The new Ecoboost gets 21 mpg!" Yea... they get about 18 in the real world, and I can buy a whole helluva lotta gas for $32,000!

You are also talking a 3.5(365hp/420tq)18mpg vs a 7.5(245hp/405tq)10mpg

Amazing how technology has changed things
I dont care what anyone says, I would own a ecoboost in a heartbeat

So what if they put the same torque down? They have a lot more horsepower, and those new engines will keep pulling right to ~6000RPM red-line, where as your 460 runs out of steam at ~3500

I will agree though, If you buy a new truck to "save money on fuel", your thinking is just highly flawed. But on the other hand, I don't think anyone who is looking to buy a new vehicle would even take a second glance at a 20 year old 10MPG OBS.

With that train of thought, you will go 80,000miles w a 460 truck(10mpg)

BUT you will go 144,000 miles with a ecoboost(18mpg)

Which means I dont need to revv into the stratosphere to make the same amount of torque. Why would you need to revv to 6000+ rpm anyways lol

The biggest thing for me is the difference in towing capacity between a 2012 ecoboost and a 1996 f150. A 96 is 5000 lbs and a 2012 is 11,000lbs! They are almost completely eliminating the need for a 3/4 ton for the average weekend warrior. I would still want a 3/4 ton for that kind of weight but still thats a huge difference.

As far as the ecoboost goes it's a pretty sweet motor but I still think they should have thrown a 4 cylinder diesel in the F150. Something similar to a 4BT, you could probably easily pull 25-30 mpg with a diesel and a 6 speed tranny.

Put power and economy aside, (which the newer ones own us in) people will tell you that

our old trucks will last longer. I see this as false simply because our trucks are older and

have been tested and tried with mileage and years, and I wouldn't doubt it if these

newer 2011+ models could double our mileage and use. I love everything about the

newer trucks, but there is something you cant pull me away from our old horses. It might

have to do with that old rumble you get from a pushrod V8, and its simplicity, no need

for high tech computers/sensors and dashboards that light up like a tree at Christmas.

So...let's finish the calculations.

In 8 years, what will the 2012 w/3.5L EcoBoost be worth? And the 460? You have to subtract all that from what you would pay up front to get to the total cost of ownership over that time period. And does anyone really think that gas will be $4/gallon in 8 years? As that price goes up, the payback period becomes much shorter.

There's no doubt the new trucks are impressive but the real test will come when these things start running out of factory warranty and hit the used market, then we'll see how the vastly more complicated Ecoboost holds it value.. or not. For example if you had a choice between a well maintained 10yr old ecoboost F150 with say 150k on it and a well maintained 1997 F250 with the 460, which one would you buy knowing you're on the hook for ALL potential repair and maintenance costs.

By that time, the 460 will be 25 years old, and the number of them on the road or even in junkyards will be greatly reduced. I'm sure that new, OEM and knock-off parts will also be dwindling in supply and rising in price. Not to mention what kind of encouragement there will be from the gubmint for them "not to exist".
