Coolant Problem

Hi all, I have a 2009 ranger 4x4 4.0l. The other day on the way to work on the first kinda cold morning I noticed my temp guage go up to temp where it sits normally, go down about a quarter of the way and then take about another 10 miles to get back to normal, if it goes back up at all. This truck only has 41000 miles. If I replaced the sensor, coolant, and thermostat all at once you guys think it would fix the problem? What do you guys think it is in the first place? Im very courious, it has never done this before, and I've had it since new.

the 4.0 should not have any problems maintaining operating temp even if its freezing cold, how is the heater working?
If you feel a change in the heat when the gauge is dropping i would say it's your thermostat that's gone bad.
If not it may be the sensor, however from experience the gauge should be dead if the sensor is going bad.

Sounds like a randomly sticking open thermostat. My 99 did this at 40K too.
If you replace it, be sure to do it with a Motorcraft, or like design that has the built in air bleed valve, so its easier to burp air out of the cooling system after a refill & one that fails in the open position, so the engine won't overheat when the thermostat fails.

Sounds like the cooling system is working properly, consider when engine cold, thermostat closed engine heats up guage goes up, engine goes over operating temp, thermostat opens, cold water from radiator enters engine, temp gauge goes down, engine temp goes down below operating temp, thermostat closes, engine warms up, guage goes up, engine goes past operating temp,

Well, I think you see how it's going.

Really? i have never owned a car, truck or tractor that have a cooling system that behaves like you describe.
My cars (including my ranger) hits operating temp, and stays there. i also have aftermarket gauge so it is not because of the stock one is inaccurate.
