Temp gauge not workign properly

92 ranger 2.3 liter temp gauge is not working. THis morning it was 40 degrees and turned the heater on and after a few mins it was blowing hot so i know the engine is warming up. Even in the summer time it never really was in the middle of Normal.

Where should I start?

Coolant Temp Sensor. on your truck I think it is on top of the engine near the t-stat. you probably have a similar one for the pcm around somewhere also. on my 99 they are both in the t-stat outlet housing. Make sure your system is completely full with no air in it......... does the gauge fluctuate when you rev the engine?

No the needle moves a little once the truck is warmed up but not up to the normal zone. It does not move when revving engine.
I replaced some temp sensor on the passenger side of the engine when i first bought the truck but maybe it was faulty. Thats all i did besides changing thermostat and then kind of gave up on it. But now im interested in getting the temp gauge working again.

You can measure the temp with a cooking thermometer, under the radiator cap. If you get a cold reading there you may have to put a higher temp thermostat in there.

The sensor you changed might have been the water coolant sensor for the pcm I think it is a 2 wire the temp gauge sensor I think is 1 wire but the other post was a good point if you don't have the factory recomended tstat the gauge could be off

On most Fords the wire for the temp gauge sending unit is red with a white stripe.

Try this very simple little test.

Pull the rubber boot off of the sender & shove a nail in it. Turn the key on & touch the nail to the engine beside the sender.

If the gauge reads full hot the gauge is fine & you probably just need a new sender since you allready replaced the T-stat.

On Fords with an idiot light the sender is a simple on/off switch. With a gauge the sender is a variable resistor.

You want the sender for a gauge.

Should have mentioned that if the gauge does'nt move you are looking at the wrong sender.
