Engine dress up?

I will be getting a new carb, i already have my intake
Before i install it, i want to buy a nice engine dress up so that ill make my engine look nice
But i need help finding the right air cleaner that will fit my 1406 carb
And im not sure if these Open air filters have a pcv system hookup or not
Im not really a fan of chrome in an engine, but if i have to get it i will get it
i was thinking of getting some type of black valve covers, and a black air cleaner? the ones that say "ford racing" or "ford motorsort"
i think it would match good since my engine is all blue except for the brackets which are black
I wouldnt mind getting some edelbrock valve covers tho
I just want to see your guys set ups, i want to get some ideas
Lets the postings begin!

Call me a purist but I don't like seeing bowtie-style air cleaners on Fords. Ours should have flat tops and not peaked styles like Edelbrock (and others) offer.

Ford style Hi-Po air cleaner ($28 at MustangsPlus.com). It comes with a PCV fitting in the kit. You have the option of installing it for a closed system or not at all. Then ya gotta run an open breather on driver's side valve cover:

GM-style (Boooo! And plain old WRONG for a Ford! ):

Some principles to follow:
  • Keep it visually uncluttered with three colors: Satin black, silver (including chrome), and Ford Blue. A lil bit of random color is OK like factory decals, small text, fittings, and the mustard colored part of the coil.
  • Remember, the more chrome it has the more time you need to set aside to keep it polished!
  • Leave the fancy colored plug wires, dizzy caps, and wire loom wrap for the cartoon cars.. ya know, imports and show queens.
  • Rusty hardware (including a rusty master cylinder) detracts from the presentation. It also suggests laziness.
  • Neatly bundle/route/secure wiring.
  • Avoid/remove overspray.
  • All stampings and markings should face in one direction. I've seen too many alternator and water pump belts with the text reading wrong. You should be able to read it left to right when standing in front of the rig.
  • All hose clamps should be oriented the same way unless there is a clearance issue. Then both clamps on that particular hose should face the same direction.
  • Avoid those clumsy, generic universal overflow reservoirs from the local parts store. Fork out another $10 to get the Jeg's recirculating overflow tank in blue or black.
  • Also avoid Stant radiator caps.. truly lame.. Get an Autolite like the one on my 68 below.

An FE that I really liked (except for the air cleaner):

The mighty, mighty 200-cubic inch, one barrel in my 68 'Stang:

Here is your flat top air cleaner with a touch of blue, black brackets, Eddy carb and blue engine paint all wrapped up in one picture. It is probably a bit much for you if you don't like chrome, but it may help for a reference picture anyway. Good luck with your decision.

That will look great and be MUCH easier to keep clean than mine. I'm glad you found what you wanted.

The valve covers are carried by Summit...

VC: Ford Racing M-6582-A341R - Ford Racing Aluminum Valve Covers - Overview - SummitRacing.com

The air cleaner looks like it has been obsoleted....the 2012 FRP catalog doesn't list it...

You're gonna have to find a vendor that still has it in stock to ask. My educated guess is that it does since there is a general consensus that some buyers would want to use a closed system.

However, it would not be a PCV port per se.... the fitting would connect to the intake side of a closed system. A PCV fitting would be either located under the carb downstream of the butterflies because the intent is to introduce crankcase gases to be burned in the combustion cycle.

The intake for a closed system would be upstream of the carb throttle plates but downstream of filtered air so the crankcase inhales pre-filtered air as per the stock configuration.
