i would like to dress up my 360.... As it sits it is nice and clean and blue.... blue, blue, blue. I want to make it look a little more hot rod-ish. it currently has the stock 2 barrel carb, but the air cleaner hides that. please post some photos of your engines, or advise me of what would look the best.... i want it to look a little vintage. please help! thanks and keep on truckin!
Don't know if you have ever done shiney before, just make darn sure that you are committed to keeping it that way before you spend the money. Get behind and it can eat your lunch. I am too lazy to have it, don't take long for the rust to start showing up and then it spreads like fire in California.
A good rule for engine compartments that you'll see played out in just about every show car/truck is to keep it under three colors. And chrome/aluminum is a color. Focus the bling on your engine and not the surrondings (hood hinges, brake boosters etc.) -nobody ever complimented a chrome voltage regulator and as John said, be prepared to keep it clean. The one in my gallery has chrome valve covers and an air cleaner and the covers have to be polished occasionally or they start showing rust specks.
If your not sure what you want it to look like do a google image search for "ford FE", "Ford 390" etc. Lots of good looking mills on there.
when i rebuilt my engine i took a little time cleaned up all the pulleys and the water pump painted them a diff color then the engine, my block was graber green the water pump and all pulleys were daytona yellow had alluminum heads and intake and edel script chrome valve covers and air cleaner as well as edel carb.
other easy ways to make it look better is makin the wiring and hoses look pretty the slip on dress up kits and plastic wire covers make a big differance.
Check out the galleries of the trucks here. You'll get lots of ideas and you can decide what you like or don't. IMHO you can't go wrong with chrome valve covers and air cleaner. There on top the engine, which makes them easier to keep clean and shiny. I've got a chrome oil pan, because it was cheap on e-bay, but nobody ever sees it. If your going to dress up your engine to show it off, remember the rest of your engine compartment should look decent too. If you put a dress on a pig....it's still a pig.
One tip, if this is daily driver, and in a High heat region. You may want to concider using less chrome and more hi temp paint. Chrome tends to hold in more heat and has been know to be a cause of over heating. Polished aluminum is agreat susatute and Looks just as good. I personlay like Polished aluminum with a dark contrast paint.
ok, i was thinking along the lines of valve covers, and air cleaner.... chrome or polished aluminum. the engine is a 360.... does anyone have any part numbers, or any good links for parts? The engine is already slick ford blue with the entire engine compartment black.
If you just looking for air cleaner and vavle covers, you can walking into andy Kragen, Checkers, Pep Boys, Napa, Auto Zone, or Ma and Paps Auto store and grabs somthing. mosth have them on hand or examples you can look at and choose from.
I like unpolished aluminum and also to keep the engine bay the same color as the truck. Of course everyone has different taste and thats why we all "personalize" out trucks.
I also like "functional" things rather than "bling". Bling is for pimps.
Wolf, where'd you get the cast valve covers? I'm wanting a set for when I do my 410 build. Not quite like those, but a source for cast would be much appreciated.
hey dark.... that's what i am looking for! i as hoping someone would have the ribbed cast aluminum valve covers. i like that old skool hot rod look! i don't want the same old edlebrock that everyone and thier brother has! good looking mill!
