Allison Auto problems?

ford rancher I already tested my torquesift it won't rev over 3600 the computer will up shift. I pull a 10000lb trailer it works great when decending hills it won't shift down to alower gear untill your tach is at a certain rpm. I love this truck.

Yeah, I have the 5-speed automatic in my truck. Now, I realize that my transmission is not the TorqShift tranny, but the principle is the same. It does cause acceleration to be much smoother. Overall it does make for a smoother, more comfortable transmission.

However, I do not for a second see how they can claim it saves fuel...since I still ultimately turn the same RPM at highway speed. And also since the gear ratios are closer together, this tranny will downshift more frequently than a 4-speed auto. Granted, I don't ever have 15,000 lb. loads on behind this truck so it's not a problem....just aggravates the heck out of me. But I can tell that if you had a SuperDuty and were towing a really big load, downshifting and causing the engine to hit redline would be a problem that wouldn't surprise me one bit.

I'm going to agree with dman on this one. For a heavy-duty truck application, I would stick with the 6-speed manual. Better gas mileage that way, more power, and you can maintain the RPM you need.

I saw a fine example today of lack of gears. I rode in an '02 Nissan X-terra today and it had the V-6 (supercharged supposedly) and a 5 spd manual. In 5th gear it was turning 2500rpm @ 70mph. I believe an extra gear would have helped out the top end and improved the gas mileage as it burned a close to a whole tank of gas in only 270 miles.

As for big trucks like mine, if Ford had a 5 spd auto in '95, I believe that I could hit 14 mpg instead of just 10 with my F-250.

A 5 spd auto wouldn't help you're milage out since top gear is basically the same gear ratio as top gear in the 4 spd and the manual transmissions (maybe .1 difference). I still prefer a manual transmission so I have more control, and I believe it helps get better milage because you can let it run at a lower rpm than an auto would. I might be wrong but that's how I see it. The only way I see to really test an auto to see if it will not let you blow your motor would be to manually pull the lever down into a lower gear and make it down shift. I believe they are suppose to shift up at a certain rpm to keep from damaging the engine, even with the lever in a set gear. I could be wrong though and it wouldn't be the first time or the last

The automatic has a safety device in the computer which, if the shifter is put into first, the transmission will shift into 2nd before going in to first. That is what keeps you from blowing the engine.
