Sticker in windshield indicates a mileage number that is 5,000 more than when changed last. Not exact but lets just say it was changed at 21000. It shows due at 26000. Current mileage is 25000 and Oil Life Monitor shows over 50%.
At what point should I change the oil?
I get that I dont want to go to 0%! But I also want to get the most for my money of each oil change. If I go by sticker the monitor will still be showing the oil has about 40% (not calculated, just saying) life left. Just not sure where the most prudent and economical point to change the oil is.
I just brought my 5.0 in for its first oil change, along with some warranty work. Im not sure what the manual states for the eco boost but in my manual it says to run the oil until the OLM tells you to change it, OR 1 year, 10,000 miles. Be darned that the dealer didnt put a sticker in my window saying to bring it back in 3,000 miles.
I guess I was under the impression that the manual said to change it every 5K. Per sticker from dealer.
Actually it states like yours....
NORMAL SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE AND LOG
3.5L, 3.7L and 5.0L engines
For your convenience, your vehicle is equipped with a message center
which determines the proper oil change service interval. You should
perform the engine oil change as indicated by the message center. The
message center will display ENGINE OIL CHANGE SOON or OIL
CHANGE REQUIRED to indicate when an oil change is needed. The
engine oil change service needs to be completed within two weeks or
500 miles (800 km) after the OIL CHANGE REQUIRED message is
displayed. Your oil change service interval can be up to one year or
10,000 miles (16,000 km). Reset your Intelligent Oil Life Monitor™ after
each engine oil and filter change; refer to the
Instrument Cluster
chapter.
If your message center is prematurely reset or becomes inoperative, you
should perform the oil change interval at six months or 5,000 miles
Im changing mine every 5k. Im not totally sold on the OLM yet, and after 60,000 miles Ford doesnt give a squirt anyway, and I believe that oil is way too advanced now days to keep to the old 3,000 changes.
Plus 5k is an easy mileage to remember and have the tires rotated at the same time that way I can follow one schedule instead of 2.
My dealer is adamant about sticking with a 5K regime. Obviously they want the business. I've stuck with a 5K-6K dump cycle so far and I'm comfortable with that. I have a rewards type of program with my dealer and they owe me 3 oil changes now.
I have complete faith the the OLM system is working just fine. It's my opinion based on many readings here that previous cam phaser issues on the 5.4's were partially due to oiling or motor oil in general. I never owned a 5.4L 3V and I never experienced the issue first hand. Perhaps I read too much into these issues but, I agree with not running the oil to 0% of it's life.
The OLM is based on algorithms that use several factors about the engine's operation to calculate the oil life remaining. I will start trusting that information when they start actually measuring the properties of the oil in the sump...which will probably not happen very soon due to the cost of such a setup. That's just my $0.02. It all boils down to it being your money and what you feel most comfortable doing.
