I replaced the PS pump with one from autozone ~50k miles ago when I rebuilt the engine. The stocker had 308k miles on it and had a small leak for a loooooong time, but never really made any noise. This pump whines and moans like my ex-wife . It is really loud and is most noticeable at low rpms when turning (like sharp turns coming down the mountain) and also when pushing hard on the brake sitting still.
I have MOBIL 1 ATF in the system. Is that the problem?
Fixin' to replace the water pump (see my other thread) and will prolly just swap out the PS pump while my hands are dirty and the tools are out. Should I use non-synthetic ATF?
Jason, when u bled the air out of it. Did u do it with the wheels on the ground or off the ground? It sounds stupid, but was proven that it can & will make a difference not long ago.
Bled it with the wheels off the ground and issues went away.
System was bled with wheels off the ground. Maybe I'll jack it up and run the wheels lock-to-lock a couple times for good measure. It wasn't noisy at first, but doesn't seem to have changed much since it started... I really thought it was low on fluid when the noise started - but it hasn't used a drop in 50k miles.
What about trying a different synthetic oil to see if that makes a difference. Kind of like using the Lucas product, it's going to be cheaper than replacing the entire pump.
But one I do SWEAR by is the powersteering leak fix...
I run two bottles in each PS pump and have no whine, or issues what so ever.
Try it before you swap pumps...
Ya, me too, but it DID fix my hard shifting when fluid was warm/hot. Added a bottle to the zf6, and within a block, i could tell the difference...(mercon V along with it).

The pump is free - lifetime warranty. My time on the other hand IS NOT...
