squeaky front end

I have been having an annoying squeak from my front end when I turn the steering wheel. I crawled underneath while someone turned the steering wheel side to side, thought I heard it coming from the rack and pinion but the noise seemed to travel. I read a few posts saying that changing the p/s fluid takes care of that. Its real noisy when the wheels are straight and a small turn side to side. Not so much when cranked all the way either way. Any Ideas.2001 ranger 4x4 off road package 4.0 101,000 miles.

How about when you push down on the front end? The sound I usually hear is from the upper control arm ball joints.

yes, there is a little squeaking that happens when you push down on the front. I thought that might just be the shocks. How can I lube those without a zerc fitting?

If they don't have zercs, they weren't meant to be serviced... I've heard of people drilling and tapping holes in order to install zercs, but I'd be concerned about metal shavings getting inside the ball joint...

They'll have to be replaced eventually - whether the ball joint itself can be replaced or if the control arm has be replaced as a unit is a question someone else will have to answer...

No way to properly grease or to add a fitting.

You can replace the ball only, but its almost the same price as the full control arm. Might as well do the lowers and tie rods while you are in there.

Somewhere around here is a thread I made that talked about the torsion bar setup, but also addresses my front end rebuild

No Zerk fittings in our OEM suspnsion, but we can use a needle & syringe sold by Harbor Freight, to inject grease through the rubber dust boot into a dry fitting & maybe gain a few more miles of use. But if the fitting is dry, makng noise & is loose fitting, its rubber dust boot is likely dryrotted & cracked such thats its let mositure & dirt in & is likely worn out & in need of replacement.

The upper & lowerball joints can be replaced on the "A" arm suspenson. If you find you need such work, go to the bottom of the "Tech Info" thread, for a link on how to replace them.

If the power steering system needs a flush, there is a link in the Tech Info thread on how to do that also.

More thoughts for consideration, let us know what you find & how it goes.
