AOD Forward Clutch question

I am rebuilding a "91 AOD for my truck project.
I have the stamped steel forward clutch drum.
There are 2 snap ring grooves for the return spring.
I need to make sure which groove the snap ring goes into.

The one closest to the end of the hub?
or the one closest to the piston?

I am pretty sure it is the one closest to the end of the hub, but I hope some "AOD GURU" can verify for me!

I took it apart and didn't notice 2 grooves until a few days later....

Hopefully I am on the right track.

And maybe even tell me why there are 2 grooves ???

Thank you for your reply!

I would take a picture, but I assembled it yesterday.
I am gonna be out of town starting tomorrow morning thru next Sunday evening, so I couldn't take a picture til then...
Right now, I have the snap ring in the groove closest to the end of the hub or farthest away from the piston.

I hope this doesnt sound lazy, just bad timing for pics...Work gets in the way sometimes...ugh.

When I get back, I will certainly take a picture.
It wasn't difficult to take apart, and it may help someone else in the future.
I haven't found a single mention of this on the web...

I couldn't find much for a AOD in the shop today, these things are just about obsolete in my world, but it got me thinking. I dont know of a stamp steel drum for the forward drum for the AOD. The AOD forward drum has a hollow input shaft that allows the direct drum shaft to go through. It is a cast drum and a steel shaft. The only steel drum for the forward is for the AODE and the 4R70W, these drums will not work in a AOD.

The direct drum in the bottom of the case is a cast drum also, but a stamp steel drum from a later AODE and 4R70W will interchange. So I think you might be referring to the direct drum instead of the forward drum.

The direct drum has a snap ring groove for the snap ring and a groove for the lip seal for the piston. I cant see how to confuse the two so a picture will still help out. If you have the snap ring in the groove furthest away from the piston its correct.

A couple pics...
The forward drum, and a pic of the pan with the dipstick plug still in the pan.
What makes the stamped forward drum not work in an AOD?

I understand the obsolete in your world, most of these are not in todays vehicles. got ya.

Of course this is not a pic of the center, but it's all I got being 5 hrs from home.

I agree, the snap ring should be farthest away from the piston.

Again I will take a pic of that center when I get home next Monday.

I can't guarantee that this tranny has never been apart. but this is what it had. according to some, it could have either a cast forward or a stamped, after 1988.
Please don't detour from your experience, just because I have heard this or heard that. I am not in the tranny business. I wish I was, but am not.
I only know enough to be dangerous!

Alright that is the forward drum, it must be right at the year when they moved to the AODE, most of them are cast iron for the AOD.

Just take a pic of the snap ring groove in question when you have a chance

i just realized you are a Master Certified Transmission guy.
Guys like me are probably a major pain in your rear, aren't we..

I am not trying to make a living working on these, just trying to do this project all myself.
One of my problems...I like to know things like "why would a groove be there if it is not needed"
Then the red light goes on, and I start thinking...and researching....and...and...but I am determined to get through this.

Please just tell me if I am bothering you, and I have no issue moving on.

I really would understand...
I don't have friends anymore, because all they ever want is to get free automotive repairs, and when I needed something in return...they are all busy...so believe me...I do appreciate you even taking a minute to help.

Found one, it even fits the AOD.... I guess I have seen way too may 4R70Ws

I can only see one snap ring groove, but anyway this is how it should look when its properly installed.

Your pictures show the second groove I keep calling a snap ring groove.
I can tell now, it's not...I think those pics are the only ones out on the web that show what I am referring to.
Thanks for clearing this up for me!

In the picture it is clear, there is only one groove for the snap ring.
I see a second groove...not as deep.
When you look at it from an angle in the garage and the light is not perfect, That second groove LOOKS like a second snap ring groove.
Again, looking at his picture, you can clearly tell it's not a snap ring groove.
But there is a groove below it.
So you don't see it?
