Hey guys,
I'm newbie to this site and need help.
Got 2001 ranger RWD. My son bought this truck with the OD servo leaking at the cover.
Got it cheap because of the trans problem. I've done a lot of servo cover O rings
and pistons in my years. This one has me stumped. Ordered everything new from ford. servo cover & O ring and piston. install went easy. Drove the truck and OD cover leaking again. Took everything back apart thinking
I may have made a mistake but no! everything looked great. By the way
the OD starts blinking[Limp Mode] I've also done the separator plate.
on an earlier fix to the valve body. I need help bad because the fluid is getting on the cat. Is there a metal servo cover offered for this trans.
I've wrote to other forums without any help hope I get lucky here.
I don't think I can remember a time were I have seen a leak from a servo cover on this transmission. Not saying it cant happen I just think it is unusual. The servo cover is a basic set up and its pretty straight forward to replace the o ring. If you are confident that it was done properly then it might not be the servo cover that is leaking. The cooler lines and fittings are near there, maybe those could have a leak. Leaks can be a pain to deal with, they can be misleading.
If you are confident that it is the servo cover leaking then there may be a small crack in the case or cover. Sometimes there can be a build up of dirt, rust or corrosion on the bottom of the case where the snap ring rides. I use a small metal brush and a pic to clean this area. Maybe that is preventing the o ring from sealing. Replace the cover if you can.
Thanks for getting back. I had put some dye in the fluid and ran it through the gears
Pretty obvious it's coming out around the servo cover bad. That's why I thought I had
maybe cut the O ring when I installed the new cover with O ring And piston. but as I said
everything looked fine. You are right it is pretty straight forward install. This trans shifts
beautiful that's what's weird with considering the amount of the leak. I'm inclined to
agree with you that it's something to do with the snap ring.seating The case is oxidised
a lot from salt here in New Jersey. Although the snap ring felt like it snapped in place
well. I will pull it back out again and check the groove again. it's not a bad job to do
even with it in the truck.
I have had 3 people come to me with this issue. Here in the North East US Salt corrosion
is the culprit. First you need determine if the servo cap has come out past the ring groove by taking a right angle pick and reaching up and see if you can feel the groove. if you can
use the pick and air to clean clean out the ring groove. Then use right angle snap ring pliers to put the ring back in. If the cover has come out past the groove let me know
I'll let you know how to make a jack screw to push the cap back in. Good Luck!
PS Not hard just need to get cat out of the way.
Thanks RM 109, It took most of this evening but i got it in. I'm just wondering how long it will stay in since it seems really strange that it came out in the first place. It seemed like the groove was was intact, but I'm almost afraid to fill it up.
Is there anything I can do to secure it so it doesn't come out again?
I also live in NJ. I bought my 2002 and about a month after that I came to a light only to be greeted by bellows of smoke. My front servo snap ring was gone and the cover almost completely out. Bought new cover, "O" ring and snap ring, put it all together. Leaked like a seave. Figured I had pinched the cap o ring I pulled cap and put new O ring on. NO GOOD
still leaked snap ring was ok. So being a machinist I machined a over cap for the servo cover. Problem solved! If you live in NJ feel free to contact me and see my fix. If yours doesn't work out. My trans also shifted like new when this ocurred. I have driven this truck for many miles with no further issue. Let me know how you make out.
Well as I expected, as soon as I put it in gear it started leaking again. The snap ring is half off just like it was the first time. So what can you do for me RM 109. I just have to say my office at work is Room 109. Is that ironic or what.
Sorry I didn't get back sooner had log in issue. Any way . Go to ford with the VIN and get a net snap ring
and "O"ring and cover. The cover has 2 letters on it like: AB, BB ect. I think the o rings and snap ring
come in a packs of 3. BTW how about an Email I was going to send you a private message yesterday.
I have never seen this before the trans cracked around the servo where the snap ring goes
Thats not the snap ring your seeing its the housing of the trans i dont even know how this could happen it did that over night sitting in my driveway
Have you ever seen this
Its no so uncommon, I have seen it a few times over the years, I have heard that this failure it due to rust build up on the snap ring and the case eventually cracks from the pressure of the the growing rust, or maybe it's just a weak spot that sometimes fails under the right conditions, who knows?
I often thought it wouldn't be too hard to create some sort of brarket that uses the pan and or its bolts to hold a adjustable brace to keep the servo in, if you could just keep it pressed in so the cover can seal you could save the transmission. But I dont have time to be creating things like that these days, lol.
In my case because the case was intact I was able to make a bracket, gasket and cap and fix mine. Being a machinist I had what I needed available. In the case with the case breaking where it did I'm sorry to say that a fix just isn't possible. These servos have immense pressure on them.

Hi RM 109. Would you be willing to machine another one? And of course I'll pay you for it. I'm having the same issue with my 2003 Ranger. Thanks
I am new to this forum. I have a 2000 Ford Ranger 4L 4x4. The top rim (outer edge)of the servo, closest to the front of the truck has corroded off, thus the snap ring can’t lock in place. About 1/3 to 1/2 of the rim has corroded off. I am not a mechanic but am mechanical. I was trying to come up with a way to secure a cover or bracket onto the case to apply pressure to the Servo cap. I found your thread this morning. I’m very interested in the cap you made. Would you be able to email me directly? My email is nward.dixon@gmail.com.
Thank you.
