I've got an 05 supercab 4x4 with 103k that I have recently had some problems with. The front drivers side hub has been trying to partially engage in 4x4 after backing up or turning the wheel hard. It is NOT vaccuum related to my knowledge as it makes noise regardless of engine load, accelration etc. If I turn the switch to 4hi, the noise immediately goes away. When i take it back out of 4x4 it is normal. Occasionally the 4x4 takes longer than normal to disengage. Is the hub assembly no good? Also, the wheel bearing sounds/feels bad regardless of hub noise. any help would be great! thanks.
My knowledge of the system is poor, what makes you think it is vaccuum related? Are there particular lines I should check for leaks? The reason i dont think it is vaccuum related is that i typically only have problems when going from reverse to drive and the noise is not affected in the least by engine load. wouldnt the hub want to engage when vaccuum was lost due to acceleration? I had a friend whose truck had issues of this sort and his hub made noise only when he accelerated hard. the noise wasnt comparable to mine either.
it uses vacuum to engage, i had the sme thing. its an actuator most likely. my mech told me the leak will be on the opposite side of the noise though. mine startted off occassionally then got worse....good luck
