I've installed a procomp 6 " lift, 35"tire, magna flow exhaust, edge cst controller, araid intake, amp running boards. it's awesome. The last item is the gears. and the decision, 4.1 or 4.56( stock 3.55) both will include the addition of limited slip differential, also considering an air lock for the front. would like your opinion/s on the final decision. should I go with the 4.1 or 4.56. is the airlock a waste or does it add value?most driving will be in town. the modifications have been made for hunting. look forward to your feedback.... Thanks
I think 4.10's would be sufficient for your modifications. You say most of the driving will be in town, forget the air locker unless you need the coolness factor. Waste of money unless you're doing some serious wheeling on a regular basis!! Sounds like a real cool truck!! Post some pictures!!!
For what its worth, none of what you have done to the truck will "add value" if you're talking resale.
Dumb question: if you change the gearing in the rear diff, would you not also need to change it in the front diff at the same time assuming it's a 4x4?

Yep. 4x4's are great until you want to change gears. Double the money .
Honestly I wouldnt even worry about changing the gears for 35s. I ran 35 on my 2009 with 3.73s for 100k miles with no issue. My brother is running 37's on a 6inch fabtech on his 2012 5.0 with 3.55s. He has no issues and it still pulls really hard. Im about to install my 6.5inch mcgaughy lift with 35's and I have 3.55s.
I'm no expert, but I would not dare run with 35's on a stock truck. I have 33's and a 2.5" leveling kit on my 2006 with 3.55s, but I have a tuner with custom tunes. I could not imagine running my truck without the tune, even with just 33s. It would just be so sluggish, but luckily the tuner makes up for that. With a 6" lift and 35s, you might as well drive around with the bed full of bricks while pulling a large trailer. I would imagine it would not be too fun to drive with 3.55s, but I don't know, I've never driven one.
In my opinion, you might be have been able to get by with 3.73 and a good tune, but with 3.55s you are probably better of going with 4.10s and you can still tune if you want. I'm not saying you can't do it, but it just comes down to how do you want the drive-ability of your truck to be?

I can understand why you would say your truck would feel sluggish with anything bigger than a 33. I had a 2005 with 3.73s and 33" tires. It did feel sluggish until I got a good tune on it. But there is a big difference between the old 4 speed w/ 5.4 and the 6 speed w/ 5.4. Even bigger with the 5.0 that I have now. I have had all three variations. I would not have ran a 35 on my 2005 without different gears but my 2009 handled the 35's with ease. I could still pull an 8000lbs load with no problem and I didnt have a tune on it.
My brother had 35's on his 5.0 before he went with 37s and honestly the 37s feel like the 35's I had the 09. He also has a flowmaster, airiad intake and sct from 5star. His truck on the lift and 37s will outrun my truck all stock.

Apologies to the OP for hijacking his thread, but interested in knowing why you would go with the McGaughys lift? I'd never heard of them until now, just curious... Not trying to start an arguement or debate, simply curious.
I did some research before I ordered my lift. My brother went with a 6" fabtech. We installed it ourselves in a day. I didnt like having to cut the a-arms or the diff bracket. Those cuts are not need with the mcgaughy lift. Also mcgaughy has been in the lowering bussiness for a long time and specialize in very high quality spindles that keep factory suspension geometry. I have yet to read anything negative about a lift or lower kit from the company. Everything is positive. They have very good customer service. They havent been in the lifting area for very long but they do offer a good viariety of kits for different makes and models and their lift kits look good. Everything is CNC machined and laser cut. And I had to 1-up my little brother with the extra 1/2".
I havent seen anyone around my area with one of these lifts and the local truck shops havent even installed any of these yet so I will have the 1st one that I know of around here.
very interesting and good to know!! I've leveled my truck and like it so much I'm strongly considering a larger lift. The way you describe this one really puts it high on the list. I was pretty much sold on the SkyJacker 6" lift as they appear to be the only lift kit out there with rear lift springs instead of blocks. Obviously blocks aren't all bad with the amount of lifts sold with blocks...
