79 Bronco project...maybe.

I'm eyeballing a 79 Bronco near by. Original 351M is gone. C6 & NP205 transfer case are still in the truck. I used to own a 351M in a pickup and I'm not crazy about the thought of putting 351M/400M back in. I really like small block fords and straight 6's. But I'm hearing different info about getting 302's or 300's to bolt up to the C6.
So, is it possible? Is it worth the hassle? If it takes a tranny change, what does that mean for matching up with the NP205?
I know this is probably alot of dumb questions. Thanks for your time.

The 351M uses the big block bolt pattern on the bell housing, so you would need to swap the tranny to run a 300. As far as I know the transfer case pattern is the same, so no worries there.

The 351M/400 weren't anything special from the factory and wouldn't be my choice for a hot rod, but a built up 400 would be a very good truck engine. I think the pistons and crank are the only difference between the 351M and 400. Or the crank and rods, maybe? They're cheap and plentiful, too. Or you could drop in a 460.

Like BaronVonAutomatc said you'll need to swap in a smallblock/300 C6. And you'll also need to grab a pair of 300 motor mount frame perches/towers out of a 78/79 F150 4x4. Other then that it's a pretty straight forward swap.

I always thought they should have offered a 300 in the 78/79 Broncos!! They finally got the right idea starting in 1980!

If you swap in a 300 take lot of pics and post your progress on the forum here.
