I just got another 1979 f150. This one is supercab 4x4 the motor is broke(400) and someone let all of the smoke out of the c6. otherwise it seems okay. since i have to change the tranny anyway what engine should i put in 300 302 351(w,m,c) 400 or 460? this thing aint no beauty queen and it isnt going to be restored just used as a mud/huntin' buggy
Well if the motors shot and the tranny is shot too guess you could use about anything. If you had a donor truck with mounts, trans, exhaust, hoses, belts, lines, carb etc etc etc.I would consider a complete swap over.If not get a car or truck 351m or 400 and a trans some where use that combined with what the truck has.Figure even if your motors shot you still have a carb, belts, hoses, exhaust, accesories that go with those motors for your truck.
If you want to change then possibly get the 300 I 6 in there, but it would be easyer and faster to put a 400 and C6 back in there.
Go to the junkyard and look around in the 78 79 F-series trucks, you should find alot of 351M 400s bolted to C6s and just try and find out what is wrong with them from the owner, or if not at least check fluids in both to see if it was running when it went in the boneyard.
thanks for the response guys the 400's are easiest to find i think i'll do that i was tempted to put the 460 out of my 2 wheel drive in but then i wouldnt have anything to drive if i broke the 4x4!
i've seen the results of tmi's research on the web and while my right foot whole heartedly agrees with you, i'm afraid my wallet is telling me to stick to used stock parts!
