What fits or is directly interchangable with a 351M for my '79 Bronco? The 351 sent a rod through the bottom and I want to put in a 300 big 6......What about bellhousing bolt patterns on the C-6 Auto trany?
I think you are the first person I have seen post that they want to drop motor size in their Bronco. But, that notwithstanding, I believe that the 300 I-6 and C-6 tranny combo. was a factory setup at some point in time so it should be a very "doable" swap.
the bolt pattern is different between the 351m and 300-6. so you would need to find a C6 that was already mated to the 300-6. shouldnt be to hard and is a great swap, gets decent gas mileage and is a great wheeler, lots of low end grunt. and with a good four barrel carb and exhaust and it would really improve the performance. I believe they even offer cams that would increase performance as well. check out cliffordperformance they offer all kinds of good 300-6 stuff .
Drop a 460 in your '79! it will really wake that thing up! Even if you drop a Stock 460 in there...
Like the previous guy said, you will need a different C-6 tranny to bolt up to the 300, the 300 has the same bolt pattern size as the 289,302's and the 351W. The 351M/C, 370, 400M, 429, 460 all use the Big-Block C-6.
Also make sure if you do drop down to the 300 I-6 that you get the correct torque converter for the 300 I-6. It is more important when you change in a 429/460, See Below:
1971-91, 289, 302, 351, 400, 429, 460 cid with 1.375" crank pilot*
1971-91, with 1.250" crank pilot*
1966-84 332, 360, 390, 406, 427, 428, (1967-71 429) cid with 1.850 crank pilot
I'm not real familiar with the 429 and 460 . Are these a good engine selection over a built 351W? What vehicles were the 429 and 460 available in? Are these engines available for fuel injected trucks . Are parts interchangable from the 351W ? Thanks
I have a 1986 Bronco Eddie Bauer with the 351W-HO and 3.50 gears. I also have a 1984 Bronco XLT with a mildy Built 460 and 3.50 gears. (pushing approx. 400hp) There is a HUGE difference in acceleration and towing. The 429/460 will give you alot more torque than a 351W.
From what I know, 429's were available in the late 60's / early 70's. I know they came in Mustangs and Thunderbirds. 460's have been in everything from the old mammouth wagons, to lincoln continentals, etc. They were popular options for 3/4T and 1T pickup trucks up until about 1996 or 1997. They came w/carbs and with fuel injection. Mostly mated to C-6 spd and E40D 4 spd autos, they also had 4 and 5 speed manuals behind them.
The biggest thing to consider when deciding between a modified 351W or a modified 460, is that the 460 swap into a bronco is going to cost you some $$ about $1600 (motor mounts, oil filter relocation, C-6 Big block tranny, etc) when all said and done
I did the swap and LOVE IT! I will love it even more when I replace my aging leaf springs in a few weeks and add on Road Masters active towing suspension add-on
The only 429 that I ever heard of coming from the factory in a Mustang was the Boss 429, and that's a whole different beast. I had one that was literally crammed into a '69 Mercury Cyclone CJ. Original engine blew up and the guy couldn't find another 428CJ, so he dropped in a 429. He said the stock 4 bbl 429 was just as strong as the 428CJ. I did a few little mods to it after I got it. That Cyclone was a big, heavy car and that 429 could make it fly! Big engines make big torque!
Ok everyone. Second question.......Since the 351M is a "Big Block" does that mean it shares the same block as the 400? 460? IF yes, then the swap from a 351M to a 460 would be much less than $1600 right? Other than motor mounts and a torques converter......
