[quote=1968 F100 Ranger;12250047]Ok... Now that the cables and solenoid has been replaced... I turned off the truck an took the key out and it was still running... Fiddled withe the ignition and it still would t turn off. Had to pull the coil wire to make it stop. It did this in front of the parts store so I bought a new ignition switch. Only thing I could think it could be... Was I right?

Could be, my truck did the same thing I got out and banged the starter relay and it stoped. In the next mont it did the samething 3 times, bamged relay and stopped everytime. Replace starter relay and problem was gone. Some aftermarket relays are crap right out of the box, if you replace it keep the reciept. I also do not like the round connection type iginition switch. Switched mine out to spade conneectors.
really just the cables can cause this? I have a 68 f100 that someone put an unknown 460 in it. I too am having starting issues. I have replaced the solenoid and had the starter tested (it passed). I have also went thru three different batteries. The truck will turn over good for the first couple of times after that it acts as if the timming is super fast and will hardly crank over. It has also melted all the insulation off of the ground cable to the battery. When it hesitates to start the cables will start smoking. Thanks in advance for any help
Sounds like a short somewhere. You would get better help/info if you started your own thread.
Thanks for the info, I didn't want to start another thread on the same issue. But by no means mint to hijack this thread either.
Could be same issue but be a different solution. I would still start your own thread to get help. Same problem has been talked about many times with different solutions. Good luck!
Well... I found another problem and fixed it last night. I replaced the pigtail for the ignition switch that seemed to have been burnt and melted prob when it was parked last (about 15 years ago). It worked great last night. Now... There is a new problem. It cranks but it just wont stop cranking. I can pull the key out and it is still going. had to pull the neg cable off of the battery to make it stop. Also, I didn't have any fuel pressure so the fuel pump is not running. This has happened once before and I thought I fixed the problem when I replaced the battery cables, grounds, ignition switch and starter solenoid. Any suggestions?
Remove the Two small center starter solenoid wires. Then turn on the ign key nothing should happen othen then dash stuff oil lite if you didn't mix any wires up or maybe they melted together. Nothing should be happening no click. Only when turned to start will the starter solenoid close and starter should spin when wires are on correct. Fords big screw up when they went to this switch with round contacts. I myself had troubles and have since changed to the flat blade type ign switch. If you have a test light hook if to one of the small starter solenoid wires you think is the right one for the start mode Then turn key switch to start. Correct wire will light up test light ONLY in start. If light comes on just by turning on key to RuN it goes on the I= terminal of the solenoid. S= for start Right! Gee I can't remember color code on wires right now.. orich
Okay update solenoid terminal with the (S) on it should have a Red with a blue? striped wire going to it..
I second the spade type ignition. Had same problems you have when thur wiring harness twice and finally replaced it. Does your starter get hot when you start it. Check fuel filters sounds junk in the fuel tank. Your going thur exactly what I did, I would look at the carb may time for a rebuilt.
Brand new tank, fuel lines, fuel pump, fuel filters, fuel regulator and carb... When I have a problem... I usually replace EVERYTHING associated with it.
