The other day the truck was fine. went outside to start it and I got 1 click then nothing. No lights, electric fuel pump would not work and wouldn't start. After about 15 minutes, a co-worker came out and used a screwdriver and jumped the truck from the starter solenoid next to the battery. It started. Over the next week or so, it started normally. Everything was good. Last night, it did the same thing as before. 1 click then nothing. I figured I would just jump it again with a screw driver... This time nothing.
My co-worker said the solenoid was bad. Would this cause the non-starting and no lights or is it something more involved?
I have been doing some research and have found that someone mentioned that if the screwdriver thing doesn't work then it might be the starter. But if a starter goes out... Its out right? It doesn't work one day... Then stop working for about 30 minutes... Work for another week... Then stop working again...
sounds like a corrosion on your terminals ,take off and clean
battery connections + & -
all connections on solenoid
ground
and connection at starter.
could be bad battery cable too , i had that on my 68 corrosion got up in the terminal somehow .

The battery is brand new and free of any corrosion.
I had this happen to a tr7 i owned. No corrosion on the terminals, pulled the starter and it was fine. When I finally got to the cables i cut the covers off and found them to be green with corrosion on it's entire length. Replaced the cables and never had a problem again
I'm sure you guys are right. I am going to go ahead and replace them. That was one of the things I didn't replace when I rebuilt the engine.
Would anyone happen to know the cable lengths? I would like to go ahead and get them before I head home for the weekend.
don't know the lengths but most part stores will have the info as to which cables you need. What was funny with my TR7 cables, on the outside the cables looked fairly new. Spent the better part of a day to figure out the cables were my problem because they looked good on the outside
Replaced the Neg batt cable ground and firewall ground. Cranked right up. I have the starter solenoid so will go ahead and replace it too while I'm at it. I'm also going to go out and get new positive cables and replace them while I'm at it. They don't look horrible but I might as well replace the whole thing so I won't have to worry about it later. I have to think that everything is 44 years old. Going to mess up sooner than later.
Ok... Now that the cables and solenoid has been replaced... I turned off the truck an took the key out and it was still running... Fiddled withe the ignition and it still would t turn off. Had to pull the coil wire to make it stop. It did this in front of the parts store so I bought a new ignition switch. Only thing I could think it could be... Was I right?
really just the cables can cause this? I have a 68 f100 that someone put an unknown 460 in it. I too am having starting issues. I have replaced the solenoid and had the starter tested (it passed). I have also went thru three different batteries. The truck will turn over good for the first couple of times after that it acts as if the timming is super fast and will hardly crank over. It has also melted all the insulation off of the ground cable to the battery. When it hesitates to start the cables will start smoking. Thanks in advance for any help
