I am about to install an external spin on type transmission filter.
My question is, should I install it in the solid trans. lines or should I install it up front were the lines are rubber hose?
Also, I want to put valves on the hoses going to the filter so when I change it there isn't as big of a mess. Is there a problem with doing this? and will the trans fluid eat a brass valve?
I mounted mine on the frame inside the right wheel well. Spiced into the return line. Haven't changed it yet so don't know about the mess. Brass valve would be fine as long as you "NEVER" forget to turn it back on!
Time for my next question, How can tell which line is the inlet and which line is the outlet line? Also, does anyone know the fluid capacity of an auto E4OD transmission? I am looking for drain and refill capacity, not the total capacity of the transmission and torque converter.
To a large degree, it really doesn't matter which line you put it on since you're not trying to protect the coolers - just catch the crap before it gets back into the pan.
According to Haynes, the E4OD takes 4 to 4 1/2 gallons, but it doesn't say if that includes the TC.
I called ford and they said that the 93 auto E4OD should use mercon 5. Is this true? or is it supposed to use mercon 3?
As for the transmission lines, I wanted to know which line was the inlet and which one is the outlet because I am also going to replace the stock aux. cooler with a larger one.
It still doesn't matter which is which - the fluid can flow either direction through the cooler.
AFAIK, all Dexron is downwardly-compatible, so I'd say use the highest number you can find. Check with someone more knowledgeable about slushboxes, though.
