Timing??
On the idi engines, there is a timing mark on the vibration damper. This mark is used to check the timing using a tool that measures the pressure in the #1 injection line and on that mark on the damper. It does require a special tool. On the tower where the injection pump mounts is another mark that is put there by the engine factory. This mark will be the mark used when another injection pump is installed on the engine. It will get you in the ball park to start the engine and use the above mentioned tool.
I dont know of any way to time the engine without getting into some real technical stuff. And using the timing tool is enough, because the eninge has to be running at certain rpm's to check the timng. This different than using a timing light on a gas burner.
If you look around, I am sure there is someone who operates an injection shop that can check the timing for you.
By the way, why do you want to check the timing ??

Timing??
Thanks for the reply. The truck has run a little ruff at idle since I bought it, so I was thinking that maybe the timing was a little off.
I am pretty sure that there are no air leaks (that I know of) I have replaced the fuel filter and air filter and it hasn't made a difference. The truck has 154,000 miles on it.
Any other suggestions would be very helpful.
Thanks

Timing??
Sounds like a plugged injector. You need to perform an engine balance test. That consists of wrapping a rag around each injector, one at a time, and loosening the injector line nut while the engine is running, just eough to let some fuel out. Each injector will cause the idle to change, if you loosen one up, and the idle doesnt change, then that injector isn't working.
There's no timing chain to loosen up in these engine's, just gears, so the timing really won't change much from wear.
Don't try to adjust the timing by turning the injection pump yourself, you need a dynamic timing meter to do that.
