have a 2000 expedition eddie bauer 5.4 , ive notice ony a few times this has happened . If sitting in traffic for a decent amount of time the temp goes up to Hot and the oil light comes on and is really sluggish . But it doesnt smoke like when you over heat a vehicle from the hood . Things that i have had replaced , New waterpump, thermostat , new radiator. new fan clutch . which was done today . I was really hoping it was that , but as it was sitting and idleing for about 5-10 min it did it again . I turned it off and turned it back on and it seemed like it was normal . Could it be electrical .
It certainly could be. The easiest way to check this is to use an alternate thermometer to check the engine temperature the next time it happens. Those laser thermometers aimed at the t-stat housing are really good for this sort of thing.
I had a similar issue in my 99 expy, instead my temp would drop to nothing and the oil light would come on. It ended up being a bad connection somewhere under the drivers side of the dash. Couldn't tell you where or what wire though. I was thinking it was a wire that was tapped into when I had an after market alarm system installed. Does yours have an alarm system on it?

I just recently read a thread about an electrical problem which leads to weird things like this. Running rough and sensors doing weird things. Of course I can't find that thread now.
Basically, there is a run of wires which runs over one of the metal A/C lines on the passenger side of the engine compartment. Over time, the metal line wears through the sheathing and bare wires gound out on the metal pipe causing problems.
Just a quick, easy, and FREE thing you can take a look for.

A few months ago, I had a coolant cap on my intake (Dorman) blow out. It directed the colant straight at my alternator. It fried the regulator. Alternator was working, but with the regulator malfunctioning there was no control of the voltage.
This made everthing go hay wire. Speedometer and tach flicking up and down, lights blinking, Radio and heat/AC shut off and on on there own.
The point of this post: electrical issues can cause some strange things.
ok i found out the the expo is not over heating , i drive it for a little bit and the temp gaghe goes up and oil light comes on . my buddy who is a machanic still thinks it could be a head gasket issue . I was hoping it would be something with the catylitic converter
