My grandpa's car won't start. We thought the battery was dead, but we tried jumping it with my truck ('92 F-150 group 65 battery with 850cca) and that didn't help. Had the cables on for 10-15min. All we got was what sounded like the solenoid "popping" and the starter might try to turn slightly. Mainly just the popping/clicking sound though. We even hooked my battery straight to the battery leads and it did the same thing. Any thoughts?
The battery is probably bad. We've had to add water once or twice. The connections are clean. Only thing is, even when basically swapping my battery in, it doesn't help.
with a bad battery, the only way to get it running is to completely remove that battery from the circuit. it will draw enough juice to keep it from starting or running.
try swapping a known good battery into the car and see what happens.
that really don't do much unless you have large welding cable and 300 amp ends on the jumpers. most jumper cables will not supply the amount of current needed to start an engine. they usually work because the in car battery is not completely dead, and you sit for a while charging the low battery from the jump car before trying to start.
and even with thick cables i have seen no starts, but drop a good battery in and hook up the cables it starts rite up.
