Mpg

I did a full tune up. Fixed all exhaust leaks. I am running Mobile1 advanced fuel economy full synthetic oil, and still cannot get better than 15 mpg. Any suggestions?

What year and model truck is this?
What engine does it have?
What transmission does it have?
What axle gear ratio does it have?

It is a 97 Expedition Eddie Bauer with a 5.4L, E4OD. And it has a 373 geared 9.75 true track out back. Also 4x4.

The EPA rated that truck to get 11mpg city; 16 mpg highway (13 mpg combined) - I'd say that if you're getting 15, you're doing pretty good...

Compare Side-by-Side

3 factors to consider: The size of the truck; the 4WD; and the driving style. It's a big, heavy truck plus, the added weight and drag from the 4WD components will bring the mileage down a bit. How the truck is driven can also have an impact.

Agreed. There is no miracle oil that is going to change basic physics. The only advantage your motor oil has is starting and warmup. That truck is heavy and has the aerodynamics of a brick. Congratulate yourself for getting 15.

The only things I can suggest, that may only make a minor difference, air up the tires to 40psi or more and change the rear differential oil to 75W-90 synthetic, if 80w-90 or 75W-140 is in there now.

Dont even think about changing the stock airbox/air filter. K&N and the like contaminate the MAF sensor with oil and dirt, causing fuel injection problems. If you are driving with wide open throttle that would see any air restriction from the stock setup, your driving style would be the real cause of low gas mileage.

Electric fans with 2 piece underdrive pulley set are the only thing I can think of that may get you a bit more but 15 is damn good. I couldn't get 15 with my truck until I did those and added a tonneau cover. I also only have 3.55 gears so you are doing really well.
