Sorry to ask noob questions, but, when I dismantled the 59-AB motor on my '46 pickup, there were no thermostats in the cooling system. Now that I'm ordering parts to finish rebuilding it, I'm a little confused. I assume the thermostats rest against the water intake on the heads, but, what holds them in place? Is it just the friction from the upper rubber radiator hose? Also, Dennis Carpenter lists thermostats as 160 and 180 degree - which should I use if the truck will only be driven during the warmer months?
the hose will hold them ok. just be sure they don't get twisted when installing hoses. i use 170's on mine, got them from napa. you don't want it to run too cold.
For what its worth to you I was speaking with a man in Nevada, who owns a 37 Flathead he runs 180 thermostats in his and he told me he runs the desert in high heat and it works great.
You just have to have a good clean cooling system, all the necessary components like fan shroud, belly pan this all contributes to the cooling system working as it should.
If you can't get good thermostats which is quite common these days with the china junk. Fender washers with 5/8 inch hole will work just fine.
