Still have steering slack.

A while back I changed out my steering box in an attempt to remove the slack but it did not help much ( a little but not much ). Today I got the wife to wiggle the steering wheel while I watched all of the steering components and came up with this: The only place that I can detect any amount of play is where the steering shaft ends at the box. I'm now thinking that I bought a junk steering box. Now I know its not the best thing to adjust the screw on the box but would it be ok to experiment with or should I just bite the bullet and buy another one?

Thanks men.
We appreciate it!

If you experiment an 1/8 turn goes a long way you don't want to get it too tight.
Have you jacked it up and checked for any slack in the bearings and balljoints.
I had one that I replaced everything on it and it turned out to be the rivits holding the crossmember to the frame, this was a 2wheel drive though.

Could be the Rag joint is worn and needs replacing.

Ok will do.

Yes, I've had it on a lift and inspected everything.
The rag joint is new.

When I had the wife wiggle the steering wheel she only turned it enough to "bump each end of the slack", which was approx. 2" of play. As I watched the steering box you could easily see the play in the shaft but no sign of movement being transfered to the pitman arm.

Smokey you do know that the steering box is the same on 2 wheel drives if you need a new one don't you, not like in the 70's that were 4x only.

Yeah I kinda thought so. When I bought the last one it looked like the same box for a lot of different applications.
