aftermarket speedometer help
i have the entire drivetrain of a 94 f350, that is going under a 78 f250 frame, the problem with that is i cant run the 78 f250 speedometer as its cable driven off of the transfer case on that year. i was wondering if anyone can give me any helpful info on what to do, i am planning on making a new gauge cluster anyways, i just dont know how the speedo works on a drivetrain of that year, and what aftermarket ones i can use for it? thanks

I'm assuming by entire drivetrain you mean the axles also, and if that is correct you can just hook up an aftermarket electric speedo to the VSS on the 94 rear axle. Which is the way the 92&up trucks get their speedometer signal to the stock instrument cluster. 91 trucks were the last year that were a mechanical speedometer setup. You say you're making a new cluster so if you decide to transplant a 92-96 (or 97 from the F250 & F350) instrument cluster you will need a PSOM that converts the VSS signal to the stock cluster. If using an aftermarket speedo make sure it reads the range of a VSS and no PSOM is required to make it work.
I made a thread about going that method to fix my speedo as the mechanical hookup on my ZF5 is fubar. There is a bit of tech info in there rla2005 supplied you can look at if you wish.
