Bought a 1986 F150 frame 2wd six cylinder manual short bed.
Frame vin# is F10EPJJ#### and has large holes down side rail. I think this is a 80-81 F100 Swiss cheese frame. Am I right?

Thanks for the pic Franklin2. My new frame looks just like that. I had planned to use it under a F150 that sees light towing (under 3000 lbs) and mostly freeway use. Having second thoughts now.

No use in having second thoughts. If I remember right, one of our members on here has a bullnose with a diesel and a swiss cheese frame and does pulls with it or something along those lines.

The swiss cheese frames were implemented to try and reduce weight to increase gas mileage. It will hold up fine.

My 80 f350 pulling truck with a 429 has ZERO issues with the swiss cheese frame as far as strength. I actually like if for the weight savings

If his 429 with a swiss cheese frame holds up to pulling like he uses it, then you should have no issues.

I never had a problem with mine, except rust. I had 30 80 lb bags of concrete on the back once from Lowe's, and didn't realize what I had done till I got on the road and thought "this is heavier than I thought". Then I realized after I did the math I had 2400lbs on it, and I put it all to the rear so i could unload it easier. That was a Duh moment, but it made it home with some careful driving, and the old swiss cheese frame held up fine.

F10 automatically denotes a 1980 F100 frame since Ford switched to 17 digit Vehicle Identification Numbers for 1981.

The fact that it is from an F100 means nothing, the difference between the F150 and F100 is simply in the springs, and on select trucks the brake size and wheel lug pattern.

Thanks Fordzilla80. That is what I was trying to research. I did not want to put a weaker frame under the truck. Have found frame strength discussions for Broncos but not F150 and F100s yet.

The only problem you may have is in a frontal or rear impact at higher speeds. The frame may bend easier around the holes than it would on a non-swiss cheese frame. But of course, most frames are destroyed in a frontal impact anyway, so that doesn't matter all that much.

That is what happened to my existing frame. Something hit in front. Replaced front clip and bumper still has about an inch difference side to side. Last frame I had straightened did not get done right and picked up new frame cheaper than fixing old.
