Hey guys I have been looking to do some upgrades and I want to add a trans cooler in my truck. I have a nice new cooler that I bought and was going to start to install it but I have a few questions and aperhensens. Im pulled my grill off to put the cooler in, its 3/4 10.5x15. My problem or question is do I just mount it in front of my A/C condesor in the front of my radiator? Im worried about blocking to much and restricting air flow making more problems down the line. Am I wrong about this? Also what is a good way to build some brackets that would suit better then the zip ties they gave me? Thanks for any help
toss the zip ties and just look around your shop or local hardware store for something just thin enough to bend easy in a vise to fab up how however it works.you just follow your nose and fab it.very simple.my A/C is still colder than needed with it in front of the condenser,so no worries there.
Ok. My A/C dosnt work at the momment so its not a big deal but Id hate to see it get installed and then have some kinda of issue hence why I asked before hand. One last question when I pipe it in I want to have my return port from my radiator go into the inlet in my new cooler then out and connect to the return line of the trans right?
You need to route the lines to the cooler first then to the radiator and radiator back to transmission. It sounds backwards but the transmission needs to operate at a certain temp. If the cooler is last then the fluid could be too cool for the transmission to operate properly.
You know even the factory routing has it going to the cooler in the radiator then to the aux. cooler. Kind of pointless to cool the transmission fluid if you are going to run it to the radiator afterward and heat it back up.
the proper way to install an aux trans cooler is as follows - trans out-radiators trans section of cooler-aux air cooler -return to trans.
the reason is,the aux air cooler simply can't cool much at all in front.atf is just to warm and you'll just heat soak it.the radiator takes most of the bulk of cooling.an aux cooler is just that,an aux cooler that cools the fluid down even further.
it is a valid point however that an aux air cooler can in fact over cool the auto trans.but it simply won't help much if placed first in line during the summer months when you need it most.
for cooler months, you can block it off if need be (according to your gauge) to help keep trans temps to at least 150 degree's at the pan.
i had to install an aux oil cooler t-stat in front of mine, due to cold winter months,so i didn't have to play with the cardboard on/off throughout the winter anymore.
Fordf250hdxlt Thanks thats what I was thinking. I dont have a gauge installed yet thats going to be in a few weeks. Im going to figure out how to mount it then go with the piping which seems pretty stright forward now i know how to pipe it lol.
