Hey guys,
Its me again. I have decided against selling my truck and keeping and finishing what I wanted to do. So I have a few questions. My dad called the junkyard today about an automatic tranny because we now know that the first gear and clutch are both gone on my 3 speed. So I need a new one. He also said he would ask tomorrow about a 302. So my questions are, do I have to put a new steering column in if I put in a auto? And will a 302/AOD bolt up okay? And last, if I didn't get a 302 for now, would the AOD just bolt up to my 300. Thanks guys!
Easiest is fix what you have. A used trans and a new clutch has you back on the road. After that save your money and look for a deal on a replacement engine and trans. You didn't say what year truck you have. 65 thru 79 have columns readily available for converting to auto on the column. LoKar makes a nice floor shift for both C6 and C4. I'd put it back on the road and consider all your options and enjoy your truck at the same time. Also I'd post the 302 /300 question over on the small block forum. I'm an FE person and so I can't advise you on the fit of these various transmission combinations. I see plenty of these trucks with all manner of engines so any thing is possible. Keep it on the road and make a plan.
I'm no expert on the AOD but it is a fine choice. I know it will bolt up to your ^ but you MUST use a flex plate for a 6 cyl motor and then when you do the 302 you'll have to get a 302 flex plate. The motors are externally balanced and the flex plate need to be matched. The converter might be different too.
As for the colum it could be reused I think. However the aod needs some electronic switch to lock up the converter i think most guys use a vacuum switch or a manual button.
What state are you in? I think i've got a used but usable disk around.
The AOD will bolt to your 300. It is correct that you will have to have a 300 flexplate. You can hook the AOD to an automatic column or use a floor shifter. There are no wires or vacuum to control it so the kickdown cable/rod has to be adjusted just right. I prefer to use a Lokar kickdown cable. They also include instructions for adjusting the linkage. If it is not adjusted right, you will burn up a transmisson in no time.
Thanks for the replies! I got the 302, I'm picking it up next week. I'm getting it first so I can clean it and paint a few parts, adn get the tranny the next week(aod) because there is only a 3 day warranty on it. Anyways, thanks for clearing up the electronic thing. I found a kickdown cable on the internet. Is that the best place to get them, or does napa have htem? THanks for that. A few more questions, I have to get the engine mounts for the 302 right? What about the tranny? Do i needd mounts for it too? And third, would anyone have any idea how long my driveshaft from the tranny to my x-case has to be? I gotta get this stuff figured out prior to instal! ANd one more, its correct that I do NOT have to hook any electronic stuff up? Thanks again for the help!
Perhaps some one who has done this before could do a write up? I keep seeing the same questions over and over again... I think WE ALL need it! Especially me as I have no mechanical knowledge whatsoever.
you will need the motor towers from a newer truck (up to 1979) with the 302 or 351W. Transmission mount will be the same one but you will have to move it back and drill new holes in the frame. The only "electronic stuff" to hook up is the wires to the neutral safety/reverse lights switch.
Again, make sure you have the kickdown adjusted right or the AOD won't live very long. Don't ask how I know this.
Thanks for that reply, that helped me out. Just a few more things, if I have to relocate the tranny mount, will I have to get a new driveshaft? And about the safety neutral light and reverse? I dont have reverse lights and the neutral thing I'm confused on. Thanks so much!
Are the motor mounts and motor towers the same thing? I just bought new motor mounts for my 302 replacement....so if I need motor "towers" also, let us know!
"Motor Mount" refers to the angle iron bolted to the motor that has rubber block molded to it with a 1/2 inch stud coming out of it.
"Motor Towers" refers to the metal bracket that bolts to the frame and with four bolts (most of us use only three) and it has a pear shaped slot for the motor mount stud to go in to.
To do a 6cyl to 302/351 swap you will need both parts.
As for the neutral safety.
You will need to run a two wires i think from the starter solenoid down to the tyranny switch. One connects to the "S" terminal on the solenoid and the other one gets connected to the wire that was one the "S" terminal. Basically its a second switch contact that must be made for the juice from the ign switch to flow to the solenoid.
Thanks for the reply 44.
I get how ya hook it up now, but does it serve a serious purpose? Because I doin't have an "indicator" as far as telling me what gear I would be in. That'd be just kind of a "get used to knowing where it is" kinda thing. So I'm confused as what exactly the neutral safety thing is. And thanks for clearing up the motor towers/mounts issue. I've almost got it all figured out! Thanks again
I'd think with no indicator the neutral safety switch is even more important! You see the switch will not let the starter solenoid turn the motor over unless the trany is in PARK or Neural. With out this switch someone could hop in your truck and start it in gear now if the idles high or they turn it over while giving it gas the truck could leap smashing in to something.
Just ask me how dumb that feels
I had a switch go bad once and jumped it. Dam near flattened a buddy of mine. DOH.............
Thanks for that reply, i now understand what and why I need it. Ill definitely be looking into getting one. Once again, thanks for all the help and replies!
