hey guys,
I been looking in those mustang magazines, and been thinking about the trans they almost all have the "AOD". What do you think it would take to mount one up to a carburated '78 302? About how much of this trans is electronically controlled, and how hard would it be to adapt them to my '67 2-wd. I already have to modify the driveshaft when I put the V-8 in, so thats not an issue.
Matt, the AOD's are not electronically cotrolled. The shifting is cotrolled by the "TV" cable. It runs from the trans to the throttle linkage. AOD's from Mustangs and trucks are more heavy duty than others. They work well with 3:50 - 3:73 gears. If your truck is an original 6 cyl with original gears they should be in this range. Should work out real nice for you.
Matt
Mine worked out great. I have a '67 with a 302 and an AOD behind it. My truck originally was a 240 six with a NP 4 speed behind it. I got lucky and found an aluminum driveshaft that bolted right in and other things to make the job much easier. Good Luck !!
Thanks for all the info Guys,
I have the 302 ready for a rebuild, but hadn't picked out a trans yet. Was thinking about a C6, but I think I'll check around for a AOD now. I'm pretty mechanical and I got my Disc brake swap to work, so I should be able to get this thing in, as long as its not electrically controlled like you said.
P.S. I know these AOD's have a lock-up converter, how is the lock-up controlled? Is it by the TV-cable, like the shifting is?
Hey this is my first post and I am in the midst of doing a swap on a 72 F-100. We have installed a 302 EFI from a 92 GT Mustang and put an AOD behind it. It's come a long way, but I am having slight problems with the AOD and hooking the shift linkage up and the T/V cable proper. I don't want to burn up the Transmission. I don't know what the AOD came out of and I need to have the correct Throttle pressure bracket for the Tranny. I think I need the one from a 86-89 Mustang, because that's when they ran straight AOD. I am having a hard time finding this specific part. any suggestions?
Ford should have the bracket but will it fit your carb is another question. I think Edlebrock also sells a bracket to fit their carb if its going into a Ford/AOD combo.
I would ask a local tranny shop/or dealer advertising in the classic truck mags for advice on the torque converter. You can buy aftermarket converters but it needs to be in the same ballpark as your gearing, engine and driving wishes.
The worst thing about an AOD is the mushy shifting and lock-up. Later models are heavier duty and a shift kit can stiffen it up a bit.
