I am interested in buying a 92 Explorer. It is 4.0 engine, manual trans and 250,000 miles.
I am wondering a number of things. What is life like on an explorer with that type of mileage. What kinds of things plagued the 92 explorer. What were the engines like, or the brakes, or transmissions or the transfer case or the differential. How about the electronic 4 wheel drive, is it flackey. Also, does this truck rust out. Also, what is the towing capacity, with the right hitch, can it tow a single horse trailer with a horse in it. What is the gas mileage like. And, what kinds of recalls did it have.
Are you considering this as a project or a daily driving vehicle? No offense but if you are that concerned about have to do many repairs or having problems, which after 250,000 miles you will have a fair amount of maintance, including chasing some rust.
Buy newer, after 94 there was a big change to the overall scheme.
The explorer that I am thinking of buying has a number of new parts, according to the current owner. New trans, clutch, brakes and tires. The other thing is, it is fairly cheap. About $1000.00 usd. $1500.00can.
I am planning on making it a daily use vehicle. It has power everything and the interior is immaculate. There is a small bit of rust on the rocker panels.
So what on the 94's is better. Maybe I should be steering clear of this one and moving up a couple of years. I don't really like the body style of the 95's.
hey for a grand why not. According to www.kbb.com what you decribed is retailing around $4500.00 So its a good deal, but i assuming this is a private sale, i didnt check that value. As for the rocker panel rust; thats not a surprise 92 Ford with rust? NO?!?!? ---Most people not living in a very dry climate would see lower body rust. But if the engine is solid and you keep the tranny clean you should be ok. Ive heard of 400,000+ on an orginal tranny in a 90 bronco II(psudo-explorer), but you need to flush or change the fluid often. Its a good deal, if all you have is $1000.
If your cash flow is a bit richer and you want a long term daily vehicle I would go for at least a 96, personally.
