Looking at buying a 92 XLT Explorer 4x4.
It has a 4.0 L, approx. 70,000 original miles on her.
Great condition!
It also has a factory towing package.
How can I tell what gear ratio it has?
Could anyone tell me if this could tow a popup or a small Hybrid
safely? What kind of tow vehicle is it.
I tow a small pop-up (GVWR ~2000 lbs) with my '92 without problems. The 4.0 L can be a little small, but it's adequate.
With the factory tow package, it likely came with a 3.73 LS rear end. The best way to check is to look on the differential tag. The second row of numbers will start with the gear ratio, with an L in place of the decimal if it does have the limited slip (ie 3L73).
Automatic transmission? If so, check maintenance records on it, and make sure that it has a good transmission cooler. The A4LD can be problematic if it isn't taken care of.
If the price is right, I think it would serve you well.
