I went out and looked at my 85 and didn't notice any plate.
Inside or Outside.

I am curious to see though.
Maybe someone wanted extra protection from loose stuff in bed.

If you need pics of original, I'll post some. Trav..

It's a vibration damper. Sound deadener etc...

It holds down on vibrations and noise.

Some of the 1973-1979 trucks had similar vibration dampers as well as our trucks.

They were installed on a as needed basis.

I would imagine it depended on manufacturing variances, installed equipment, stuff like that.

CTUBUTIS explained it well.

I've seen them installed on 1975-1979 supercabs etc...

They were a SILENT recall. If a customer complained, they got one of those

Years ago my friend had a F150 and at highway speeds the back of the cab would vibrate badly from air blowing between the cab and bed. Ford's answer was that damper bolted in place.

Another reason I was told, is from some trucks being a incomplete chassis(flat bed), it was install as some kind of armor just incase the load comes through the back of the cab.

Some trucks had them and some didnot. My 84 did not have one but my 89 did(took it out to save weight LOL)

Did not know they were a "SILENT" recall. (had to laugh, Silent, sound deadener, vibration damper etc... )

I knew if the truck was making noises from behind the seat it got one...

Does make sense...

You would be surprised all the silent recalls the manufactures have. They ONLY get done, if there is a customer complaint
