i set my idle at about 900 rpm with the truck in park. but when u put it in gear the idle drops down below 500 rpm. in order to get it idlleing good while in gear the idle in park needs to be at about 1400 rpm. way too high for me. i installed a msd blaster 2 coil, accell 8mm wires, new cap and rotor about 2 months ago. i just havent really messed with it. i tried adjusting the linkage at the carb but still cant get the idle in park to be around 900 rpm in both park and in gear. its no big deal but i just dont like the truck idling high like that. ooh yeah it does it even after the choke is fully open so i do not think it has to do with the choke. i have a 600 cfm edelbrock carb on a edelbrock performer intake. thanks in advance.
Have you adjusted the idle mixture? Checked for vacuum leaks? Is the vacuum advance connected to manifold or ported vacuum and what's the timing set to? At 1400 RPM it's probably getting into the main circuit so the mixture screws won't have much effect.
When put in gear, the idle should drop 200-300 rpm due to the added load on the engine. I usually set the park idle to about 700-800 rpm so it's about 500 rpm (or a little lower) when in gear.
i have adjusted the idle mixture screws and it didnt help. i will have to check all the vacume lines.i know one of the two going to the tranny is hooked up i dont kow where the other one is sooposed to hook to. any suggestions?
when i first start the truck it idles around 100 rpm. is after i drive it for a little bit and put it into park or nuetral that the idle jumps to 1400-1500 rpm.
hmm that coiuld be it. way back when. there used to be a little diaphram lookin thing on the vacume advance line going from the distributor to the carb. i didnt have a peice of hose long enuff so i just used a little peice of plasic to conect the 2 parts of the hose together. i might get me a new vacume line and see what happens. thatnks i didnt even think about that.
Adjust the truck to 900 rpms (wherever you like it) in park and then try applying the brakes firmly without shifting and see if that kills the truck/idle.
should i set iit after the engine warms up??? i think that might be my problem. i set it on a cold engine. ill try it tomorow if it ever stops raining.
