Ok. I'm confused. I did a search here for the proper fluid to use in my transfer case, and I'm starting to get a headache. I have a 2002 F 250SD 4x4 with a 5.4 w/.automatic trans. My owners manual says 2 qts of Mercon ATF, but some of the posts I read say no. Is there a specific transfer case fluid I should be using? What brand? And friction modifier is only for rear axle?
The only difference in merc atf and mercv is that its rated for a higher temperatures and that it is more slippery. What wouldn't benefit from keeping temps lower and more slippery. I've used it for my t-case and haven't had a prob. If you want amsoil or syncromesh would be another alternative.
Also why did they really end merc atf? one of the stipulations in merc atf was shift feel in The Taurus transmission. What model ended in 2006? The ford Taurus. So how would you judge shift feel in a vehicle that no longer exists.
Make merc V and it doesn't have to be tested in a Taurus. Should ford waste money testing it in t cases? why not make a different fluid all together insert "motorcraft transfer case fluid"
