I took off the thermostat neck last night for paint and on the other side of the thermostat was a bunch of orange gunk with a little bit of green on top is it something I need to worry about? When I drained the coolant it was almost all water so I don't know Idk if it's from that or not any ideas?
Is this in reference to the PSD engine you're preparing to install? I had to go to your profile to read your signature to figure out the context. Signature is the WRONG place for such info, since a lot of members have them turned off (they esp. waste valuable screen real-estate on hand-held devices).
Or is this in reference to the gasser engine you're decommissioning?
Ahhh my bad I did not know you could do this yes it is for my 97 psd thats going into the truck. And this wasn't a little bit it was a pretty good amount of it at least a quarter of and inch of this stuff on the thermostat and it was almost like a paste but not as gritty with a green layer over top that almost looked like grease but was too thin to try to feel it
Well, yeah, if the anti-freeze concentration was weak, then it's likely the SCA level was weak, too. No real way to test it; you can hope that it was that way for only a short time. Def. worth doing a cooling system flush while the engine's still on the stand. Shoot, you could use this as an excuse.... er.... good reason to install a faincy IH water pump with the built-in coolant filter base (now, with the engine out of the truck, would be the time to do it). Just make darn sure you have plenty of SCA when you load it up with coolant on the install.
When it dried it clumped and was a fine powder I don't know if that helps at all but I didn't find it anywhere else but I did have the engine upside down for a week or two
