The garrison unit on my highboy is leaking (surprise, surprise..) and I can't afford to replace it with a rebuilt unit. I have a 78 f150 4x4 parts truck with complete steering set up. I was wondering what it would require to use the 78 4x4 steering box on my 74 highboy? Could I use the 4x4 steering box with 2wd internals and reverse the pitman arm 180*? If I'm thinking correctly, that would get the rotation correct, and I would be able to more-or-less bolt it in where the current box is, without too much modification. If there is a write-up on using a 78/9 f150 4x4 box I would love to read it, but I'm not finding any threads with specific enough information for me. Thanks for any help.

What "rebuilt" unit are you referring to? With Power Assist, the control valve and ram cylinder are separate parts.
The manual steering gearbox is used, as it has nothing to do with Power Assist.

I know they are separate parts, and that it is a manual gear box.. the garrison valve is leaking.. The ram is fine. I want to convert mine to integral power steering, and get away from this stupid power-assist crap. I have the parts to do it, I just need to know which parts to take from the 78. My highboy is within 5 minutes of me, but the 78 parts truck is at our farm about 20 miles away. I could fix what I have, but what guarantees that the ram won't start leaking 20 miles after I fix the valve? I would rather be able to find parts for the darn thing when I need to, AND be able to afford those parts..
Did you miss the part where it says "not available at this time"? I have been there multiple times. I do not want to rebuild the power assist system, I want to upgrade it to full integrated power steering. Basically, I want to use what I already have to get power steering in my highboy.
i got a couple of the 3/4 ton boxs laying around also. pesonally thats the way to go. you can use a box off a 4x4 chevy to. seen it done also and those trucks are easier to find to rob parts off of.
See I don't want to track down any more parts. I want to use the power steering system that is on the 78 f150. I already own it, and it won't cost me anything in that regard. I'm a broke college student (huge emphasis on the broke part).
Yes the f150 box mounts to the outside of the frame. I am going to get it all next to my highboy and take a closer look.. I know it can be done, I know someone that has done it.. I just don't have their phone number so I can't call him up to get his advice. I did talk to him just yesterday actually (sold him a grille) and he said that it was really pretty easy to do. He highly suggested using the 78 steering on my highboy. Going to see if I can't contact him and get his help. Thanks anyways guys.
