My truck needs a new air filter. I want to replace it with an intake kit. I was looking at Riff Raff and saw both the S&B and the AFE kits. I am not sure why I would get one over the other. Also why do they sell both kits with replaceable filters or a reusable one. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
The AFE flows the most air and has a semi enclosed box. The S&B is totally enclosed and will be quieter. I personally like the AFE 2. I run the washable dry filter. I think the filter minder might get tripped on the S&B if you are trying to move too much air, but mods can be done to remedy it .
It is your choice whether you want to wash the filter or just use a replaceable one
I have the Motorcraft AIS and a 38R turbo and I can boost up to 30lbs and not move the filterminder in mine. It's nice and quiet and I think it was cheaper too.
i picked up a MAC off craigslist for 60$ with a washable filter. its not enclosed and i can hear the turbo and every time the truck shifts i hear the whoosh from the excess boost but i love that sound

I hear ya, I love that sound also. It gives me a good feeling of being able to hear whats going on under the hood.
I just installed an S&B with the washable filter a couple weeks ago. So far I am pleased. It's designed and built well. The enclosure muffles most of the 'whooshing' noise my 6637 had, but it makes the turbo whine more audible. But not objectionably so. While the 6637 performed very well, I wanted to go with a more factory type, enclosed set up. My next Blackstone should reveal any differences in filtration performance, if there are any.

Reason: Added pic.
I have the AFE 2 on my truck and I like it. You can definitely hear it moving air and compliments the sound of the turbo. Also, the "whooosh" sound is always cool to hear too.
I have the Ford AIS, and I'm not looking to change from it - I get 30 PSI boost with my STOCK turbo (first link in my signature backs this up).
The AIS is a "cold-air intake", meaning it does not draw air from under the hood where a lot of heat is generated. This asks less of the intercooler, which is a good thing. I can't say anything against the other cold-air intakes, I have no experience - but I really like how Ford did the AIS. My filters last 20,000 miles (one year for me) before replacement and my truck breathes the same air as yours.
Many talk about hearing the turbo "sing", this is the turbo noise under the hood that is there any time the truck is running. I was in a truck with the 6637 and I found all that whining under the hood to be more than I could bear for long - since I'm used to the AIS. I bought a 4" exhaust with a Flo Pro 6192 muffler from Joe at that diesel performance shop across from Staples and I do like the whistle out the back. I can roll down the window to hear it, or roll up the window to just let everybody else enjoy it. I will say this, leaving the window down next to a Link bus and punching it makes a sound that I can only describe as a Harpy's battle scream - this serves the animal within ourselves very well. I digress... we're talking about air in.
Let me know if you want to see the AIS in a truck. Today happens to be the one day of the year I replace the filter.
If you added all the percentage gains claimed by the aftermarket companys, your truck would make fuel. You might get a bit of an initial boost in mpg and power, but don't expect miracles. The best thing is the lower exh. temps.
How are you guys with the AIS not setting the filter minder? I installed an AIS to relieve the turbo noise (which it did), but now I set the filter minder light everytime I hit near 25 psi. I am using the stock filter minder, not the one that came with the AIS.
