1999 7.3L cube van. 350k miles. used in my company so it's always had service when it needs it.
recently started surging occasionally (feels like an ignition miss on a gas engine) when it's fully warmed up and running at hiway speeds. runs good except it smokes (white smoke) until it's warmed up. tranny was checked and is OK.
dealer service says one cyl is bad with low comp. I'm a bit skeptical as I've scrapped a vehicle in the past due to a supposed bad motor and subsequently found out motor was OK.
I also don't know how a bad cyl would make it surge.
Sounds like you either a dead hole(low compression) or failing injector(s). If you don't trust their compression test you can do it yourself.
Yes a low compression cylinder will cause a "hesitation/jerking" sensation especially at low load situations, such as when the torque convertor is locked and you are just barely in the throttle, generally around 45mph depending on gearing up to about 55.
