Can i hook up a hot wire from my battery and ground a coil to give it power enough to spark a sparkplug. And is there anyway to get a spark plug to fire without a coil if there is plese tell me. Thank u
If you hook 12 volts to the + side of the coil and ground the -, when you take the ground off the coil will fire, once. What happens is the magnetic field generated by the primary windings in the coil collapses when power is disconnected and induces current in the secondary windings. Remember, the spark coming out of the coil tower needs to have a return path back to the coil case. If you just have it sitting in air you won't get a spark. To generate multiple sparks you need to have multiple disconnects on the - side of the coil.
What is it you're trying to do? If it's an afterburner setup, a model T or model A coil will generate multiple sparks internally.
Also, a spark plug will not fire without a coil.
I'm not sure if the A/T coil can handle 12 volts or not. If I'm up at a normal hour I'll call my friend with a street rod set up with an afterburner and ask how he did it. Just guessing but you probably run a ballast resistor in the circuit.
A Model T coil will start with a 6 volt battery, but then you switch
over and run it with a magneto...Yes, a Model T coil has contacts
that vibrate, that will give you a "continuous" spark....
