For the first time I've had to use my spare tire. When I lowered it down I noticed a small chunk of cast metal in the rim, then noticed an electrical unit hanging by the wires under the frame. The chunk of metal was part this units housing which now exposes the circuit board inside.
I unplugged it and turned it sideways a bunch of sand poured out, so it's been exposed to the elements for some time now.
Question is what is it? and do I need it?
Like I said it looks like it's been full of water so I doubt it has worked in a long time. I have no trouble codes or other odd things showing up on a diagnostic scan.
It has some heavier gauge wire to it... Ideally if I don't need it I'll just simply leave it unplugged and cap the connector.
Here are some pics looking up from the back. Yes it's rusty, it's a farm truck in Ontario so it takes a beating.
I was a little of on the name, it's a fuel pump drive module. They are notorious for doing what your's has done, cracking and breaking up, water and dirt gets inside and they fail. When they do all you can do is coast over to the side of the road.
What causes them to break is the cross member they're attached to is not flat, the module is rigid. When they install it on the assembly line and tighten it down, the unit is stressed and eventually cracks.
Most replacement units have spacers that are installed under the mounting screws to keep this from happening again.
I just want to thank everyone who responded. I have a 10 hour drive ahead of me Saturday and I picked up and installed the new module today, got my tire patched and things are looking good!
I don't know how this thing was still working, I swear there was a tablespoon of sand inside it.
