ZF5, Expert Needed

I have a one 460 ZF5 (4X4) that seems to be in great condition and a diesel ZF5 not in so great condition.

The diesel has a lot of play at the input shaft. The release bearing "snout" is bolted on, the gasser is not.

QUESTION: The different gear ratios not withstanding, could I swap the cases in order to have the better "gasser's" guts in the diesel case?

I ask this because I haven't been in a manual transmission for nearly,.... well let's just say since high school.

I think the internals will fit any of the cases, but the bell housing bolt patterns are different. The input shafts will also be different, and if you have a small block gas version, it will be setup for a concentric slave cylinder instead of the external used on the diesel version. Here is a link to ZF's website where you can find exploded diagrams, etc. (scroll to bottom of page) ZF Friedrichshafen AG | Catalogs

Eric,

thanks for the info. Would you know just what the specific differences are in the input shafts other than possible tooth count?

I am trying to get a good 7.3IDI ZF5 operational before winter sets in without spending thousands.

Again, thanks Eirc,

JD

Why not just elongate the two bolt holes on the 460 bell and bolt that trans up to the diesel?

The number of clutch splines may be different and possibly the pilot diameter and length. The gear tooth count is different due to the ratio differences between the gas and diesel versions too. I've only worked with the small block version, so I'm not sure exactly how the two compare other than what I've picked up here and with the parts list.

460 zf5 to IDI

thank you for the link. Since I have access to all the equipment needed, this is not a bad idea. Although, I have read the other posts discussing new weakness around the bell housing, I believe that by welding some structural supports in those area might resolve that issue.

Again, thanks.
