Ok, so I just got my truck back together the other day from replacing an injector and o-rings on the rest, arp head studs, new stand pipes & dummy plugs, oil cooler, welded up egr cooler and cleaned turbo. Got it fired up on the second attempt. Man she was purring sweet. Ran in high idle for about 15 mins and it started surging. So I shut it off and got out my new AE and hooked it up. Tried to start it again and... nothing. Set the AE to read icp and ipr. Icp was about 220 ipr was at 85%. So I take the turbo off for the second time (turbo drain tube goes in first, oops) and pull the ipr. The screen was FULL and suck in.
Now the question.
Why does everything I read about "ipr screen sucked in" say to replace the valve? Why not just the screen? I am pretty sure it wasn't a problem before the oil cooler job. And it only ran for at most 20 mins.
Got Screen kit from my local dealer. Ford # 3C3Z-9H529-A list $58.51 net $46.81. (KIT-FUEL INJ)
I think the reasoning here is if the screen has failed trash has gotten into the IPR. If you catch it before it fails, you MIGHT get away with changing just the screen.
That's close to what mine looked like Rusty. But my plastic piece around the top was cracked a little so I pulled it apart and tried to straighten out the screen, and thought man that sucker is stiff. I laid it on the bench and flattened it back out with a hammer. That's when I was able to get a good look at the stuff that was in it. It was fine sand like.
By the way I removed the turbo to get to it and used a big crescent wrench. I thought for sure that wouldn't work, but it did. Hope I can get it back on the same way without having to fabricate a tool like yours.
Could work. I bought the socket so I could use a torque wrench but found my tw wouldn't fit in there with the intake manifold in there AND I ended up pulling the turbo so I probably could have gotten by without the socket also .
I'm glad you showed up rusty, I remember reading your post last week that you paid $46.00 for the screen kit. That's why I asked the question. Icouldnt understand why last spring I bought the revised stc' fitting kit which included the ipr' screen, oil sump screen, stc' fitting, hpop' O ring , new bolts for pump and fitting, O rings. For fitting and Turbo oil tube gasket for Turbo oil supply line.and. the gasket for the pump. Cover. $63. Insane diesel
Yup, thought I would get it quicker from local dealer, it was in nearest warehouse. Still took two days. Turns out- I could have bought it anywhere. Lesson learned.
I am in no hurry I work on the Mississippi river and I'm gone for a month at a time. So I can afford to shop and wait. But if I would have been home for a couple more days I would have gone to ford or international to get it. Just so I could have it running before coming back to work.
