It's a lifestyle, being on the boat for a month and I usually take off for a month. But having to do all this work to my truck has put me into overtime (riding extra)
I am a line haul pilot/captain. I run generally from St Louis to New Orleans. But I have ran to Pittsburg on the Ohio river and almost up to Chicago (lemont) on the Illinois river , that's as far up as the boats I run can go(never rode a retractable wheelhouse boat) the bridges are too low.
I usually bring 35 loaded barges down river south bound and as many as 42 (mixed, loaded and empty barges) north bound.
Boy, I'm speechless. I don' t know if this feeling is admiration or jealousy, probably both. I've been a union carpenter for 40 yrs. I'm 61 trying to keep up with the young guys. Just plain old hard dirty work. But at least I've earned my Pension and know my wife will be taken care of. When I look at it like that it's been worth every day. Well Capt's it's bed time good luck to you my friend, Hope we get some Rain. TIM
That's what's good about the river, unlike blue water. I and most all captains on the river started as deckhands working hard manual labor. Freezing in the winter and stroking out in the summer heat. There is no or there used to no be an "academy" to become a pilot. I had to work 18hr days to get trained as a pilot. 12 hrs a day on deck and 6hrs a day steering a boat with the captain.
