im normally on the 6.0 forum but my dad has a 7.3 and wants to get a tuner possibly with a custom tune like i run.
Is there a preference over here with the 7.3 group on what tuner and who to use for the best tunes? He is stock no mods just looking for a little better mileage and some giddy up.
A lot of us here run DP Tuner. There are a lot out there, but most prefer to get custom tunes, not like the big name brand companies that just shove s program on a card, box it up, and sell them by the thousands. I'm sure others will chime it to help ya.
now on mine i run and sct tuner and use idp custom tunes, no the one from sct. the email it to me. from what im reading things need done diffently on the 7.3? so what tuner do i get him and i send the tuner out itself to be programmed?
i see beans is a chip, do you mix the tuner with the chip? or just do one of them
I upgraded my tunes from Swamps a few months ago, and wow! I have been running their tunes for 3 years now. The new tunes are awesome! I was considering a turbo and injectors. Not now! Well, I'll still do it, just not in as big of a hurry!
What I find interesting is that there are a few guys out there that are upgrading tunes for the 7.3, which are about 10 years old for the newest trucks out there.

This could be a problem with any tuner. Your dad needs to get gauges, exhaust and intake before tuning the 7.3.
I say DP-TUNER all the way, because that's what I got. Look at any of the peoples sig that recomends a tuner. People will recomend what they run.
Look around at peoples sigs and see what tuner most people on here have.
Mostly, you'll find fans of Beans, BTS, DP, PHP, Swamps, all of which have already been mentioned and all provide a chip with their tunes on it. Each of those suppliers offers a variety of tunes to suit your desires/needs. There are a very few who will install a blank chip and run their own custom-built tunes.
The bottom line is that when asking "which chip/tunes should I run?", it's just like asking "what is the best engine oil to run?"... and the outcome of the question could range anywhere from mild to wild depending upon who chimes in.
I would say that your decision should start with defining the following issues:
- cost
- your goals for what you want from a chip (increased mileage, smoky show-off opportunities, serious racing, EGT control while towing, etc.)
- if you want personalized custom tuning, your geographical location will make a difference
It is nice to get something from someone that is close to you so if you have problems you can just go visit them rather than emial or phone. However, DP does have a chip that they can email tunes to you like you have on your 6.0. I dont run DP but they can do that. I also thought there was someone that could put tunes on an SCT or something similar to what you have. Everyone will have their own opinion on who writes their tunes but all of them will be good. I run tunes from Gearhead Automotive performance. It is an up and coming company and has had a spot in Diesel power Mag.
If I did it again I would go with a TS chip that way you can try other tuners out there's tunes if there is something you don't like about the tunes you are currently using. Just my opinion. For example I like the 80eco tune I have I like the shifts and shift points my 60eco sucks I hate it the shifting sucks it almost feels like the tranny is slipping the 120 shifts good but it takes forever for it to shift into OD. But I guess I should of tried them before I bought them Wich is an option with DP on the F6. I would switch but I just don't have the funds for a new chip right now.
